Suzanne Magaziner Named Trinity Rep's Theater for Every Generation Campaign Chair

Trinity Repertory Company has announced that Suzanne Magaziner, Trustee and Executive Board Secretary, has been named the new chair of Trinity Rep's $18 million campaign, Theater for Every Generation.

"We're so honored to have Suzanne's invaluable guidance on this extremely important endeavor," said Artistic Director Curt Columbus, who announced the launch of the Theater for Every Generation campaign in April 2010. "This campaign will ensure that the legacy of Rhode Island's state theater will live on well into the future – making theater for every generation a possibility."

Magaziner joined the Board of Directors after 10 years as a subscriber in 1990 and served until she and her husband Ira Magaziner accepted jobs in Washington, DC during the Clinton administration. The board welcomed her back in 2008, and in the intervening years she's served on several different committees and co-chaired the 2009 Pell Awards with Ira. As campaign chair, she now oversees the Campaign Steering Committee, a group of trustees and community members who guide the campaign's strategies and activities.

Along with Magaziner, the campaign has welcomed on an honorary campaign board, headed by co-chairs Elizabeth Z. Chace and Nuala Pell. The honorary board consists of local and nationally-renowned actors and artistic luminaries (including 2009 Pell Award-winner Kevin Spacey), valuable supporters of Trinity Rep, state legislators, and past artistic directors of Trinity Rep. They are: Dan Butler, Brian Dennehy (2004 New England Pell Award-winner for Excellence in the Arts), Olympia Dukakis (2007 Pell Award-winner for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts), Oskar Eustis, Peter Gerety, Martin Granoff, Clare Gregorian, Vartan Gregorian, Adrian Hall, Richard Jenkins, ShaRon Jenkins, Eugene Lee (1999 Rhode Island Pell Award-winner for Excellence in the Arts and Trinity Rep resident designer), Amy Morton (2011 Pell Award-winner for Distinguished Achievement in the Arts), Katherine Quinn, Senator Jack Reed, Stephen Sondheim (2000 Pell Award-winner for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts), Kevin Spacey, and Senator ShelDon Whitehouse.

"It's critical that this campaign be successful, and quickly successful, if we want to maintain Trinity Rep the way we've all come to know and depend on and love it. I've made it my business to make that happen. Fortunately, we've got a great team; all the pieces are in place," said Magaziner.

Despite the harsh financial realities that have plagued the country during the recent economy, Magaziner said she sees that it's just as important now, more than ever, to invest as a community in our arts and arts education initiatives. "Fundamentally, theater puts us back in touch with what's most human about ourselves and helps us to see the humanity in other people. It brings people together around issues that affect all of us. That becomes more and more important when there are so many forces pulling us apart. Theater helps us get in touch with our common humanity – what could be more important than that? And nobody does this as well as Trinity Rep."

Since its founding in 1963, Trinity Repertory Company has been one of the most respected regional theaters in the country. Featuring the last permanent resident Acting Company in America, Trinity Rep presents a balance of world premiere, contemporary, and classic works for an estimated annual audience of approximately 120,000. In its 47-year history, the theater has produced 58 world premieres, mounted national and international tours, and, through its MFA program, trained hundreds of new actors and directors. This season marks the 45th year of Project Discovery, Trinity Rep's pioneering educational outreach program. The education department at Trinity Rep has been providing after-school programs for students of all ages and abilities - now under the auspices of the Young Actors Studio – since 2005. Last season, Trinity Rep's educational programs reached nearly 15,000 Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut students through matinees as well as in-school residencies and workshops. Brown University/Trinity Rep offers professional training for actors and directors in a three-year MFA program. Trinity Rep's 48th Season continues with the world premieres of Sparrow Grass by Curt Columbus, Love Alone by Deborah Salem Smith, and The Mourners' Bench by George Brant and closes with Marc Camoletti's Boeing-Boeing, translated by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans.
